Julia Mangold is a German born sculptor who exhibits internationally and currently lives and works in Portland. In her third solo exhibition at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Mangold continues her exploration of shape, form and materiality. Her sculpture and works on paper are at once rigorous and formal yet also very sensual. Mangold’s intimately scaled drawings are a graceful continuation of her formal sculptural investigations. Constructed using graphite, pigment and several layers of paper, the drawings echo the forms found in her sculpture while the suspended layers give the works on paper an unusual sense of dimensionally.
Julia Mangold has shown extensively in Europe and her work is included in such public collections as the Busch Reisinger Museum, Harvard University (Boston, MA), Yale University Art Museum (New Haven, CT), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY) and Deutscher Bundestag (Berlin, Germany).
