| USA: American video art at the beginning of the 3rd Millenniu, curated by Daniel Birnbaum, Gunnar B. Kvaran and Hans Ulrich Obrist, presents a new generation of American artists who, in various ways, are reinventing the language of video art at the same time as they are asking fundamental questions about American society. When doing research for this exhibition we witnessed a great explosion of creativity in different artistic fields in the main artistic capitals of the US, New York and Los Angeles, as well as in geographically more remote places that have become new centers in their own right, such as Portland and Miami. It is not easy to find a common language or a dominating artistic trend among emerging artists, but it quickly became clear that video in general has a very strong position as a medium and as a tool. It became obvious that the majority of American artists are in one way or another involved in the art of moving imagery and that many are using the video camera as a utensil (almost like a pen) for documentation as well as for expressing urgent messages or telling stories. The central position of the medium will probably lead to a transformation of video as a discipline and as a form of expression. The artists selected scrutinize everyday life, analyze the social and the political mechanisms of American society, and create moments of irony, defiance, and poetry, thus offering notes on life in America today.
