The Elizabeth Leach Gallery is pleased to present our second exhibition and first one person show with Seattle based artist Claire Cowie. In Homunculi, Cowie will feature several large scale sculptures along with oversized watercolors. The Wikipedia defines Homunculi as "creating another being with bits and pieces of another's past." There is also reference in the definition that this new being can turn on its creator. The resulting work is fantastical creatures from the artist's imagination that directly address the global issues confronting all living creatures as well as our interconnectedness. One is drawn into the mythology and power of the work. The narrative is at once horrifying and whimsical, much like Grimm's fairy tales.
Claire Cowie continues to gain national exposure through exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery, Tacoma Art Museum, The Frye Art Museum, and the University of Texas at Dallas, and her work can be found in significant collections throughout the region. Cowie has recently been shortlisted for the First Annual Contemporary Northwest Art Awards at the Portland Art Museum.
