JAQ CHARTIER
Full Spectrum
July 03 - August 02, 2008

In the exhibition Full Spectrum, Seattle based Jaq Chartier’s paintings continue to push the limits of paint
and light while exploring patterns influenced by science, through observation, analyzation and notation.
Recognized for having developed a new genre, combining the ephemeral qualities of beauty and the
excitement of experimentation, Chartier’s luminous surfaces are dictated by the chemical reaction and
migration of various dyes, stains, sealants and varnishes as they mutate, bleed and blend together. The
instability of materials, and the resulting aspect of chance within each painting, is integral to Chartier’s
conceptual framework.

Jaq Chartier is the recipient of a 4Culture Special Projects Grant, an Artist Trust/Washington State Arts
Commission Fellowship, and a PONCHO Special Recognition Award from the Seattle Art Museum's Betty
Bowen Committee. She was also a 2004 Creative Capital Grant finalist, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation
Award nominee in 2001. Her work was featured on the first Foo Fighters CD in 1995, and in the acclaimed
traveling exhibition Gene(sis): Contemporary Art Explores Human Genomics.
