Drawing and Yuken Teruya
October 02 - November 01, 2003
Preview Reception   Wednesday, Oct. 1, 6-8 pm
First Thursday   Oct. 2, 6-9 pm
Elizabeth Leach Gallery presents two new exhibitions in October: Drawing, a group exhibition featuring Christine Bourdette, Louise Bourgeois, Nan Curtis, David Eckard, Gabriel Manca, Cornelia Parker, Kate Shephard, Kiki Smith, and Terry Winters, and new sculpture by Yuken Teruya.

Drawing celebrates one of the most fundamental of visual art processes. Working with graphite, charcoal, ink, watercolor, pastels, or metal wire, the artists in Drawing point up the wide-range of effects created in the simple gesture of making a mark. This exhibition features original drawings by numerous contemporary artists who are distinguished by their demonstrated command of the visual language, ranging from such influential greats as Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith and Terry Winters; through artists of growing international repute Kate Shephard and Cornelia Parker; to important artists in the Northwest Christine Bourdette, Nan Curtis, David Eckard and Gabriel Manca.

Yuken Teruya      Silver Mitten (Detail)  2002

The paper constructions of artist Yuken Teruya are amusing, astounding and truly artful. Working with the most commonplace material imaginable - paper bags from chain stores and fast food restaurants - Teruya transforms these simple bags into carefully carved portraits of trees. Based on real trees from his own photographs, these delicate objects are realistic, despite their diminutive scale and unlikely material.
