Across twelve new paintings in Elegy, Stephen Hayes, known for his politically-engaged, impressionistic landscapes that evoke the feeling of a place, emphasizes the abstract aspects of his practice, offering an opportunity to reflect on the unsettled state of the world. Installed in an arrangement that recalls prayer flags or a Morse code distress signal, these contemplative paintings allude to conflicts at home and across the world. In the second gallery, Hayes will present new landscape monotypes, a continuation of the artist’s engagement with printmaking.
