Elizabeth Leach Gallery is excited to present I hope I still feel this way tomorrow, an exhibition of new work made by Eugene-based artist Charlene Liu. Liu’s fifth solo show with the gallery traverses painted and printed mediums and utilizes a variety of techniques to materialize the intangible, subtle moments of recall, recognition, and change that occur on the edge of perception and imagination. The artist employs tactile, highly manual processes such as hand-carved hatching which ground herself and viewers in the steady, conscious passage of time. Liu allows forms to drift, tumble, scatter, and accrete across the surface to express the intimate moods and perceptual inferences of the day-to-day.
Liu thoughtfully applies pressure and touch to embed color, line, and image into the material surface. The chance combinations, accidental marks, residual ink, and textural imperfections reveal the human touch behind the smooth gradients and clean lines, which otherwise appear deceptively mechanical.
