Brooklyn-based artist Nicola Lopez excavates the idea of a contemporary landscape through a multimedia, transdisciplinary practice, folding drawing, printmaking and installations in with her background in urban planning, architecture, and anthropology. Lopez interjects and interacts with the photographed natural environment, layering upon them a geometric, structural landscape of her imagination. The hollow contours of oil pumping rigs sprouting from the branches of a tree, arachnid clusters amble along the horizon like tumbleweeds, a shallow bucket cradles the glow of the sun like a lantern. Lopez invites her viewers into a complex, composite world, prompting us to both question the essentiality of the manufactured world we ordinarily occupy and illuminate the points of union that exist between the natural and constructed worlds.
