Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos), is currently featured in the group exhibition, Regeneration: Long Island’s History of Ecological Art and Care at the Parrish Museum. Siestreem is one of eleven artists in Regeneration whose work responds to Long Island’s increasingly heightened environmental threats.
A focal point of the exhibition is a presentation of newly commissioned work by Siestreem made in collaboration with the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers, an intergenerational collective of Indigenous women who harness the ancestral tradition of seaweed farming and harvesting in the Shinnecock Bay estuary.
In these new works, Siestreem draws on her abstract mark making and interweaves Shinnecock and Hanis Coos cultural and ecological traditions and images into paintings and sculpture.
