Elizabeth Leach Gallery is thrilled to present Expression of Structure, an exhibition of Portland-based artist Chris Chandler’s work.
Chandler’s background in audio engineering is evident in his work. The shooting peaks and plummeting dips of his lines recall undulating sound frequency graphs, while the stark, striking peaks that graze the ceilings of his compositions evoke a stereo amped to the max. We as viewers experience the artist toying with the volume of each piece, immersing us in his world- at once bold and brash yet restrained and concise in its graphic vocabulary. Chandler’s newest body of work, however, incorporates yet another discipline as a source of inspiration: architecture. The exhibition, Expression of Structure, borrows its title from a design approach distinguished by its mission to reveal rather than conceal the underlying structure of a building. Here, Chandler channels this philosophy by emphasizing the guiding lines used in the drafting phase, allowing viewers an intimate insight into the processes required to create a work.
